September 23, 2011 - Homes for Our Troops Hosts First Annual 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk

National non-profit organization helps raises funds for those men and women who have served our country since 9/11 by hosting this memorable and patriotic event

New Port Richey, FL - Men, women and children of all ages are invited to run or walk in the area’s first ever “9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk” to honor servicemen, women and all those lost in the September 11th attacks on America.  This very visual and patriotic event will generate desperately needed funds for Homes for Our Troops, a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing disability-friendly homes and renovations to those injured in the line of duty since 9/11.

Homes for Our Troops is literally giving back to so many who have paid the highest price for our freedom-the ability to live disability free.  Sergeant Austin Burchard of Lutz is just one example of the very meaningful and critical work Homes for Our Troops is doing each day.  In March 2009, Burchard suffered life-threatening gunshot injuries while manning his post in Afghanistan leaving him paraplegic.  After undergoing multiple life-saving surgeries, Burchard says that thanks to Homes for Our Troops, he is looking forward to having the freedom to go anywhere in his home and to be able to do things for himself for the first time since his injuries.  The organization recently completed a specially adapted home built just for Sergeant Austin Burchard.

When asked how living in this new home would change his life, Burchard stated, "I will finally be able to get back some of the little things people take for granted like showering, cooking, and choosing my clothes from the closet, caring for myself and moving around my home independently.  I can’t thank you enough for this opportunity."

On Sunday, September 11th, beginning at 7:30am at the Gulf Harbors Club House in New Port Richey, participants can improve their health and raise funds for this important mission, while doing their part to honor the victims of the 9/11 attacks. One hundred percent of proceeds from the 9/11 Memorial 5K Run/Walk will go to Homes for Our Troops.

The community may register at www.active.com with registration fees beginning at $20 before September 9th, and then going up to $25 on race day.  Every finisher will receive a medal, goody bag and official event t-shirt.  The timed race will offer awards to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers in each race category.

About Homes for Our Troops: Homes for Our Troops is strongly committed to helping those who have selflessly given to our country and have returned home with serious disabilities and injuries since 9/11. It is our duty and our honor to assist severely injured Servicemen and Servicewomen and their immediate families by raising donations of money, building materials and professional labor and to coordinate the process of building a home that provides maximum freedom of movement and the ability to live more independently.
